MITCHELL — The most anticipated first round match up of the 89th annual South Dakota State Amateur Baseball Tournament didn’t disappoint Friday afternoon.

Alexandria got run scoring hits from Jed Schmidt and Aaron Groenweg for a 2-0 win over Canova in a rematch of last year’s Class B championship game.

Schmidt’s run-scoring double in the second inning appeared to be perhaps the only run on the afternoon until Growenweg added some insurance in the eighth with a solo home run over the left field wall.

Schmidt got the start for the Angels and pitched a complete game, giving up just four hits while striking out seven and walking one.

Trey Krier took the loss for The Gang — pitching eight innings, giving up the two runs on nine hits while striking out three.

Alexandria will meet Volga after the Cormorants defeated Crofton 3-2 in the afternoon’s second game.

Volga took an early 2-0 lead after the second inning and added another run in the top of the seventh before Crofton started to mount a comeback with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The Cormorants were led by Jake Arlt and Austin Buysse with two hits while Parker Puetz picked up the win — pitching 7 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs on six hits before handing the ball off to Trevor Olson who pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for the save.

Jared Wiebelhaus and Corey Rouch had two hits each to lead the Blue Jays.

Ben Hegge took the loss — pitching six innings, giving up three runs on 10 hits before handing the ball off to Tyler Priest.
